What is the difference between the MS-350 and the MS-700?

The MS-350 (350 cm³) is optimised for drones and handheld use, while the MS-700 (700 cm³) offers higher sensitivity for vehicle and backpack surveys. The key difference is detector volume.

The MS-350 and MS-700 are both field-ready gamma-ray sensors from the Medusa MS-series, but they differ primarily in detector volume, sensitivity, and intended survey platform:

  • MS-350 – Contains a 350 cm³ NaI(Tl) detector crystal. Its compact size and low weight make it the preferred choice for drone-borne surveys and handheld use. It is well suited for applications where portability is critical.
  • MS-700 – Contains a 700 cm³ NaI(Tl) detector crystal. With twice the detector volume, the MS-700 has higher sensitivity and produces more statistically robust measurements per time interval. It is the most popular choice for vehicle-mounted surveys and backpack use.

As a general rule: the larger the detector, the more gamma-ray photons are counted per second, which reduces statistical noise and allows for either faster survey speeds or better data quality at the same speed. The right choice depends on your platform, required resolution, and area size.
